What the heck is EOS?¹

PackSmart has been using the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) since 2009.  EOS is a system for managing human energy in an organization.  All companies have an operating system; however, it may not be a consistent operating system.  Here at PackSmart, all our employees have a clear understanding of where the Company has been, where it is now, and where it is going, through our quarterly State of the Company meetings.  Our employees see our 10-Year Target, our 3-Year Picture, our 1-Year Plan, and our quarterly Company Rocks and financial objectives.

The EOS structure allows for weekly departmental meetings that start on time, end on time, and have a clear, consistent agenda.  Issues are identified, discussed, and solved with action items set, and where employee accountability takes place.  We identify the most important things (called Rocks) to accomplish in the next 90 days and we are laser focused on completing our Rocks.  Employees and their manager have a quarterly conversation that occurs offsite to work on the business, as opposed to the normal daily conversations that occur when working in the business.

I had the opportunity to introduce EOS to a charitable organization which I am involved with and the comment that I received from the participants was that they had never been in a meeting where so much was accomplished in a short period of time with to-do’s established for the meeting participants and the left hand knowing what the right hand was doing.

Our meeting time has been cut in half with the use of EOS and stuff gets done!  Our employees are in the know with our open and transparent discussion of company matters.  Using EOS, our team has been able to quickly pivot as a result of the pandemic to work effectively with our customers and with each other.  We cannot imagine life without EOS!
